Dude, you’re getting a MAC! Apple worth quadruple Dell’s market value!

Apple now worth quadruple Dell’s market valueBC128189-79A2-4E8C-A9A9-6FB08FF7487B.jpgOn October 6, 1997, in response to the question of what he’d do if he was in charge of Apple Computer, Dell founder and then CEO Michael Dell stood before a crowd of several thousand IT executives and answered flippantly, “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.”

A little more than a month later, on November 10, 1997, new Apple Interim CEO (iCEO) Steve Jobs responded, speaking in front of an image of Michael Dell’s bulls-eye covered face, “We’re coming after you, you’re in our sights.”

On January 13, 2006, after a little more than eight years of hard work, Apple Inc. passed Dell, Inc. in market value, $72.13 billion vs. $71.97 billion at market close, respectively.

On July 27, 2007, Apple’s value doubled that of Dell’s, $127.81 billion vs. $63.65 billion, respectively.

On December 6, 2007, Apple’s market value passed 3 times that of Dell’s, $165.66 billion vs. $54.42 billion, respectively.

Today in NASDAQ trading, Apple rose $6.05, or 3.48%, to close at $180.00 and the company’s market value passed 4 times that of Dell’s, $158.66 billion vs. $38.97 billion.

1 million Final Cut licenses sold

Apple: 1 million Final Cut licenses sold
1AC8331D-1453-49DF-B7EA-C5434544050E.jpgApple on Thursday said that it has no plans discontinue its popular Final Cut software for video editing and post-production, after rumors began circulating at NAB that the company had plans to sell the software. Moving to quash rumors, the company told TVB Europe that the Apple had sold its millionth Final Cut Pro license and that its new Final Cut Server software is the company’s latest addition to the product family: “I can categorically state, on the record, that is not the case,” said Richard Townhill, Apple’s director of marketing for professional video applications. The report also cites research by SCRI noting that Apple took 49 percent of the US professional editing market in 2007, while Avid took just 22 percent.

Steve Jobs on TIME’s 100 list

Steve Jobs makes TIME 100 list
6B68A359-5B4D-45BB-9944-99EB5EBD6E99.jpgApple CEO Steve Jobs has secured a place in 2008’s TIME 100, a list of who various guest contributors to the magazine consider the most influential people in the world. Barbara Kiviat describes Jobs as “great at playing the countercultural icon,” championing products like the Mac and the iPhone in face of needless industry standards; in reality he is a “canny CEO,” Kiviat argues, who “knows how to sell product.” It was Jobs and not Steve Wozniak who focused on marketing the original Apple computer, and Jobs’ efforts have led to approximately $24 billion in annual sales, supporting 22,000 workers. Stock value is said to have risen by more than 70 percent in the last year.

Jobs’ strategy is said to differ from rivals in ignoring overall marketshare, turning instead to whichever group of customers is most profitable, and selling them what they want — something exemplified by devices like the MacBook Air. More controversial may be Jobs’ personality, which Kiviat says has been described as “mercurial” and “egomaniacal,” as well as micromanaging. Regardless, she concludes, Jobs has been raking in profit for Apple bosses.

iPhone Rumors keep on Coming!!! iPhone template hints at new design?

Leaked iPhone template hints at new design?
688ECE9A-14A1-4245-AC5F-42D9E6FE67E0.jpgAs the impending 3G iPhone release approaches, rumors of its potential design, specifications, and features are abound, but some theorize that people are confusing multiple devices which could indicate an “iPhone nano”.

iLounge writes that select launch partners have supposedly received design templates that point to a 3.5-inch screen on the new version, countering observations that put the screen size at 2.8-inches.

The templates show a slightly tapered design on the top and bottom, which contrasts the current model’s relatively consistent thickness. It also indicates additional sensor positions (potentially a second front-facing camera), a slightly rounded face, and several color options – white, black, and red.

The bottom of the potential iPhone design shows large cutouts where the speaker grills are located on the current model, with two additional holes and a rounded dock connector. “

Warner Bros. to Release Movies for Apple TV and On Demand Same Day as DVD

Warner Bros. to Release Movies for Apple TV and On Demand Same Day as DVD [Home Entertainment]

CB45F1B5-9C58-4D0D-96C6-ABD00FF8B00C.jpgThe format war over, and Blu-ray safely enthroned as the victor, Warner can now turn its sights beyond—to downloads and the infinite format war. Time Warner’s chief executive announced today that Warner Bros. will release movies for on-demand systems like Comcast’s and Apple TV on the same day they are released on DVD from now on.

Warner’s been toying around with it for a little while and been increasingly open to internet distribution, so it doesn’t come as a major surprise. Interestingly, according to their numbers, offering same-day releases on the internet only eats into DVD rentals by 3-5 percent, and actually increases sales. Plus, online rentals/sales double bring them more than double the profit margin of physical discs, so everybody wins, except for Blockbuster. (So Hollywood really does have nothing to fear from online distribution.)

The best news though? Head of Warner’s home video said that they’re trying to make online rentals “at least as lenient” as grabbing a DVD from Blockbuster, breaking open that 24-hour window. Now that would be a deathblow for Blockbuster. [<A href=”http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/warner-brothers-to-rent-movies-online-sooner/index.html?ref=technology”
